Unruly temporalities: Older queer women and non-binary people narrating later-life sexuality

Article by Nika Looman, Ladan Rahbari and Katrien De Graeve

In this paper Nika Looman, Ladan Rahbari, and Katrien De Graeve explore queer temporalities in relation to later life sex through the stories of older women and older non-binary people. The instability and non-linearity of sexuality across the life course is highlighted, showing how compulsory heterosexuality and compulsory non-sexuality manifest in people’s stories. Central in this paper is the potential to reinterpret sexuality later in life and to destabilize the pervasive normative notions of sexuality. Queer temporality opens up the possibility to affirm changing desires and pleasures, and to acknowledge the body’s agency in shaping later-life sexuality.
